Why Your ROAS Dashboard Is Lying to You (and What We Track Instead)
iOS14 inflated platform-reported numbers by 30–50%, and most agencies still report on them. Here's the actual math we run every account through.
If your Meta dashboard says 5x ROAS and your bank account doesn't feel like it, you're not imagining things. Platform-reported ROAS and what actually lands in your P&L have been drifting apart since iOS14 — and the gap doesn't correct itself. Most agencies just keep reporting on it anyway.
ROAS is a marketing metric, not a financial one
It tells you what a platform thinks it caused — not what it cost you to deliver, and not what margin it left behind. iOS14 alone inflated platform-reported numbers by 30–50% relative to what Shopify actually shows. That gap gets worse the longer nobody checks it.
What we track instead
We reconcile against source of truth every week: Shopify P&L, not platform pixels. Server-side tracking, GA4 with enhanced conversions, and Conversions API held at a 90%+ event match score — so the number a client sees has already been checked against Shopify, not assumed correct once a quarter.
The actual lens: contribution margin, not ROAS
Campaigns get organized by margin tier, not by audience or creative type. Budget moves daily toward what's actually profitable, not what's getting the most clicks. When a campaign gets killed, the numbers behind that decision are visible — not just "we decided to."
Three things to check this week, even if you never hire anyone for this
Does your reporting reconcile to Shopify's own numbers, or only to the ad platform's? Is your CAPI event match score above 90% — if you don't know that number, find out before you trust anything downstream of it. And are budget decisions made off campaign-level ROAS or off contribution margin? Those two disagree more often than people expect, and margin is the one that pays salaries.
